If you live in your own home, the best thing you can do is NOT to buy a vacuum - but to get rid off any and all carpets. And THEN buy a vacuum - but a different one, say Neato robotic.
If you are stuck with carpets - then Miele is unbeatable. I paid over a grand (with accessories like motorized carpet brush) back in 2010 - and never regretted for a minute for spending this astronomical sum on a vacuum - even now, when I have a house and laminate floors daily taken care by Neato.
My friend - she does have carpets - says she LOVES vacuuming now with Miele vacuum. She is disabled and limps - so this tells you how light and great Miele vacuums are.
