Here is the situation. My friend's friend who lives in Israel wants to come to the US for her nephew's Bar Mitzvah. She is a single mother and wants to take her child with her. She is almost out of job. Finishing her last project, which will take 2-3 weeks, and being let go right after that. Neither she nor her sister knows how to go about it. Does she need an invitation? If yes, is it better to get it from her sister (a close relative) for the Bar Mitzvah (important family event) or from just a friend in US for a casual visit? Will be very grateful for some advice or information.

I don't know all that much, but from what I know, I think it's best to get an invitation from a friend rather than a relative, and for her to be sure that, when questioned by customs, she makes sure to keep talking only about attending the bar mitzvah and maybe doing tourist sight-seeing, rather than spending time with her sister.
